Chapter 17

It was time to spend a day at home. I had been so busy the last few days that I decided to spend an ‘at home’ day. Eagle's Nest could use a good cleaning, and despite my best effort, it did not yet feel like home. I needed to cut the grass, weed the garden, plant some more perennials, and work on my cookbook. Argus needed some attention too, so I vowed not to leave the house today. After dusting, vacuuming, and washing the floors, I decided that the day was too hot to work outside. The garden would just have to keep for a cooler day.

As I was preparing to work on recipes at the kitchen table, I found the note cards that Tim and I were working on and looked through them. I had more information now and wrote up two more cards to add to the stack. Tim and I would go over them later.

We still had to find a lead to Donna and Leigh Turcotte. They must have known Helga better than anyone, seeing that she lived with them for the time she was here. I tried an Internet search, but it didn’t pull up anything. Maybe Tim would have better luck using his police database.

While I was at the computer I pulled up some Maine news sites to read about Jason’s shooting. They really didn’t have any more information than I did, but I did read about the community’s reaction to the shooting. Bath has very little crime and shootings happen very infrequently. There was an almost panicked response from some of the neighbors, fearing that this might be a random shooting. There were editorial calls for the police to be more proactive. Poor Tim must be taking the brunt of some of this.

I started working on my cookbook. I wrote an introduction to American chop suey. It came as a surprise to me that there are places in the United States that had never heard of this dish. It was created during the war to make use of easily obtained ingredients and to be easy to make after a hard day at the munitions factory. I have made this dish so often I had never even written down the recipe, so I had to stop and think about how to write it out. Argus was sleeping under the table while I worked on the cookbook. He looked up at me and barked and danced around. As I looked at the clock I realized that it was his supper time. Pugs have a surprisingly accurate internal clock.

“Hey, Argus, you want your supper?” I asked. That sent Argus into a fit of squealing and dancing until I got his dish ready, then he wolfed down his food.

Just as Argus was finishing his meal the phone rang.

“S’up?” I said in greeting.

“Hi, it’s me.” I recognized Tim’s voice. “Jason is going to stay at Maine Medical Center for one more day. Then he should be ready to go home.
